The Pretzel - A Complex Move

Posted by: Gareth   on:  17/11/2013   Category: moves

You don’t need to be as skinny as a pretzel to perform this move, you just need very flexible arms. You might like to practice it to the Beatles song “Octopus’s Garden”, because you will feel like one of the said cephalopods by the time you’ve done it a few times.

McLaren Vale Rocks

Teaching around eighty people how to dance Rock n Roll in forty-five minutes isn't the easiest task. But, to a committed dance teacher who really wants to see our wonderful activity preserved and gaining popularity, it's definitely worth the effort. On 9th November 2013, a 1950s Rock n Roll fundraiser was held in the Institute Hall at McLaren Vale, South Australia. The guests were mainly young people in their early twenties. Most had little dance experience, but  they fairly bubbled with energy and enthusiasm. A group of experienced dancers also attended. That was great, as they could show the learners how  the dance should really look.

This isn't your usual type of song. It's one of those rarities in which the lyrics are all spoken instead of being sung.

Little Things by Bobby Golsboro

Posted by: Gareth   on:  04/11/2013   Category: rock-n-roll-dance-songs

When the dancers have worked up enough of a sweat that it's time to say "see you later, alligator" to Bill Halley and The Comets, you need 'filler' songs. Little Things is a great example.

On The Spot Dancers

Posted by: Gareth   on:  02/11/2013   Category: advice-tips

Try to dance mainly on the spot instead of travelling across the dance floor. It's a great way to develop fine Rock n Roll dancing technique. To achieve it requires accuracy and compactness of movement along with economy of energy expenditure.  These are the very things that great dancing relies upon.

Holiday Road by Lindsey Buckingham

Posted by: Gareth   on:  01/11/2013   Category: rock-n-roll-dance-songs

Okay, we're here to Rock n Roll Dance, not to pack up the family wagon complete with dead auntie on the roof and head down the Holiday Road with the Griswalds. Lindsey Buckingham's hit song from National Lampoon's Vacation movie can certainly help us with that, but only if you're ready for a fast one!

Sunday Girl by Blondie

Posted by: Gareth   on:  30/10/2013   Category: rock-n-roll-dance-songs

Not a bad tune to rock to. Sunday Girl was recorded by Blondie in the late 1970s, so it has a more modern disco sound, yet the beat is unmistakably rock n roll. With a medium-fast tempo, it's a great boogie tune, though not one that's often chosen for rock n roll dance sets.

The Lincolns - Adelaide band

Posted by: Gareth   on:  30/10/2013   Category: musicians-bands

The LincolnsThe Lincolns have only been rocking Adelaide with their unique style of 50's Teddy Boy Rock n Roll since early 2011, but don't let that fool you. The band is full of seasoned musicians with a passion for rock n roll that goes well beyond the bands inception.
