When rock 'n' roll dancers hit the floor for a jive they don't beat around the bush. They get on with it. They need music that does the same.
The song Beating Around The Bush by Australian band Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons from 1976 doesn't beat around the bush either. It's a solid rockin' tune from the very first note. If you hear this and your feet aren't itching to fire up you're not a rock 'n' roll dancer. It's a medium fast tempo with a beat and sound that could have come straight out of the 1950s, featuring a strong saxophone and lively vocals.
Jo Jo Zep was in fact acclaimed Australian musician Joe Camilleri. This track wasn't a top forty hit, which is a pity because it was worth far more. The band scored big Aussie hits with Shape I'm In and Hit And Run. Joe went on to form top-rated Australian band The Black Sorrows.
If you can find a copy of this track you might find it becomes one of your favourite dance numbers. It's definitely one of mine.
