June and Derek - Competition winners
South Australia has many fine Rock n Roll dancers. We have a large Rock n Roll following and many venues featuring bands that play our favourite music style with, good dance floors to practice on. One partnership that has blossomed in recent times is that of June and Derek.
They recently shone in the Rock n Roll section of the Le Classique Festival 2007 dance competition held at the Marion Western Youth Centre, winning first Australian place and first South Australian entry.
They also won first place at a Rock n Roll Ball, "Rock The Night Away", held by our Human rights commissioner in Adelaide's Irish Australian Association Hall, Carrington Street, with June gaining an extra prize for Best Dancer.
June is a slightly built, bubbly redhead with modeling credits in television and hard print. She progressed
from Ballroom dancing to Rock n Roll a couple of years ago, an inspired move judging by the awards she has won so far.
She trains three nights each week at the Port Adelaide Athletics Hall and at the Adelaide Rock n Roll Club dance nights. She is regularly invited to dance on stage for top Adelaide music acts, including the renowned Flaming Sambuccas and danced recently for Movin' Melvin Brown, a Ray Charles impersonator from the United States.
Derek has been dancing Rock n Roll for twenty years and has won numerous other awards. He is a regular dancer at Adelaide's top Rock n Roll venues, where he often works with beginning dancers.
Unfortunately we don't have any dancing shots of the star partnership in action at this stage, but hope to rectify that soon. June and Derek are pictured here at "That'll Be The Day", an open-air Rock n Roll dance festival organised by the Adelaide Rock n Roll Club and held at the trendy and popular beachside suburb of Glenelg each year.
