Nagambie is a small Australian town about 120 kilometres north of Melbourne. Local couple Chris and Christine run a Rock 'n' Roll dance group with weekly lessons and several dances each year. They have grown from an original four to thirty-six regular attendees. They're also members of the Shepparton Cool Cat Rockers.
It's a familiar story widely seen in Australia. People living in regional districts don't have the same options for sport and entertainment found in large cities. Rock 'n' roll dance is a perfect choice, providing fitness, friendship, fun and a feeling of fulfillment from learning a widely appreciated skill - the ability to dance well.
However, things changed. Earlier this year, like most other similar groups they were forced to put classes on hold due to Covid-19. Instead of giving up, they took the initiative to go online. They headed for YouTube, uploading a series of short videos on their own channel to teach dance moves. This is a growing trend that can help beginners particularly to review in the comfort of their own homes what they learned in classes.
As a Rock 'n' roll dance teacher for over ten years, I strongly appreciate the value of this. Students would attend a class and learn a new dance move, but a week later they had forgotten the steps and needed to refresh. Being able to review instruction online is a fabulous way to bridge the memory gap.
Christine says "We're hoping to grow our channel to encourage people from all over to learn to dance. We keep our regulars up to date with latest videos on our Facebook page Here and our YouTube channel is Here or search for Rockin' Nagambie.
