The basic back-step is a great way for beginners to start expanding their talents. As a teacher myself I advised students that a well performed back-step routine is a simple way to look polished on the dance floor. That in turn boosts confidence, which is one of the important keys to becoming a great dancer.
In this video Chris & Christine from Rockin' Nagambie, Victoria show how easily it can be done, adding in an overhead turn. We can easily observe some of the aspects that make their routine look good.
Here's some crucial points:-
- Most importantly, note how relaxed they are. That is essential for really great-looking and enjoyable dancing.
- It allows them to stay in control, particularly over their lateral movement. That in turn allows them to keep their dancing compact and basically dance on one spot, so there's less chance of an embarrassing collision with other dancers.
- It means they conserve energy rather than wasting it on being uptight and over-powered. That's important. At night clubs a band would play a first set for an hour. I would dance for an hour. Others would dance for six or seven songs and then sit down for a while. The reason was they they wasted so much energy putting unnecessary strength and power into the dance that they were quickly pooped. Relax and conserve is a great way to go.
Practicing basic back-step is a great way to improve. This video makes it easy to learn a basic routine for it.
